The Native Art of Michoacan
Franciscan friar Vasco de Quiroga arrived in Michoacan in 1537. As a part of his conversion of the Purepecha Indians he went from village to village teaching each community a special handcraft:
Santa Clara del Cobre: fine copper items
Patzcuaro: gold lacquer ware
Uruapan: Mate lacquer ware
The Villages around Lake Patzcuaro: each with a different type and design of pottery
Angahuen: fine weavings
San Felipe de Los Herreros: embroideries
Ochumicho: pottery devils and other
Patamban: brillant green pineapple pots.
and on and on!
Casa Serenity has examples of the finest of these handcrafts, collected over the past forty years.
